Book signing:  8:00 PM – 8:30 PM @ Philadelphia Photo Arts Center

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is excited to host a free lecture and book signing by photographer Abelardo Morell.  Abelardo Morell is well-known in the photographic community for his camera obscura images. He essentially turns whole rooms into the interior of a camera, making eight-hour exposures while creating magical layers of the upside-down outside world onto the dim interior rooms.

Abelardo Morell currently has two solo exhibitions in New York at the Bonni Benrubi and Bryce Wolkowitz Galleries. He also has work in a group exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and will have an exhibition in 2011 at the University of Kentucky Art Museum. Morell’s work is held in numerous major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Morell’s seven books include  Abelardo Morell (Phaidon Press, 2005) the retrospective monograph, Camera Obscura (Bulfinch Press, 2004), A Book of Books (Bulfinch Press, 2002), Abelardo Morell and the Camera Eye (Museum of Photographic Arts, 1999), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, photo-illustrations by Abelardo Morell (Dutton Children’s Book, 1998), Abelardo Morell: Face to Face (Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, 1998), and A Camera In a Room: Photographs by Abelardo Morell (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1995).

This event is part of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center free lecture series by visiting contemporary artists.  Lectures are open to the public and serve the educational purpose of cultivating an active dialogue about photography.
