Altered states? is an open call for entries of photo-based works which have been altered by the artist at any point during the photographic process. All content and photographic media is acceptable — alternative processes, traditional black and white, and or digital methods. Additional artistic mediums, such as paint or found objects, are encouraged as long as the piece is photographic based.


Harris Fogel is an Associate Professor of Photography, and Director and Curator of the Sol Mednick Gallery and Gallery 1401 in the Media Arts Department at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Media Arts offers programs in Photography, Film, Animation, and Digital Video. Gallery 1401 offers a year-round schedule of contemporary exhibitions of photography. The Sol Mednick Gallery was founded in 1978 and named after the founder of the University’s Photography Program. It is the only endowed gallery for the exhibition of contemporary photography in Philadelphia and recipient of the prestigious Photo Review Award for service to photography. Mr. Fogel’s photographic work is in major museum collections, and he has a long exhibition record. He has written for art and photo-related publications and projects, and has taught photo history for more than 20 years. One of his long- standing interests is placing contemporary work within a contextual framework.

Submissions will only be accepted by email or on a CD Submit jpegs, sized 8 inches on the shortest end at 72 dpi File should be named by artist last name and numbered (ex. Johnson_1) Entries must include attached entry form Mailed submissions will not be returned Entries that are incomplete or do not meet exhibition standards are disqualified; fees will not be returned. A photocopy of a valid Student I.D. must accompany all student submissions.


Student: $15 for first 2 entries; $10 for each additional entry Adult: $20 for first 2 entries; $15 for each additional entry


All work must be available for sale. The ARTSPACE Gallery receives a commission of 20% of sale before taxes. All payments to artists will be in the form of a check and mailed 30 days after the close of the show.

AWARDS Juror’s Choice Award: $500 cash, a feature on the PoconoArts website, and an article in its monthly newsletter following the exhibition. Curator Award: $200 cash ARTSPACE Student Award: $100 cashNOTIFICATION

Entrants will be notified via email on or around November 23 only if he/she is accepted. A list of accepted artists will also be posted on our website. Shipping and exhibition details will be provided upon acceptance.


The ARTSPACE Gallery reserves the right to disqualify any work that does not meet exhibition standards and/or work which is noticeably different than the original jpeg submitted.


While every effort to properly care for works is made, the ARTSPACE Gallery, and the Pocono Arts Council, and are not responsible for the loss or damage of works while in transit or during the exhibition. Artists should provide their own insurance coverage. The ARTSPACE Gallery, and the Pocono Arts Council reserve the right to reproduce accepted works on their website, and for any advertising or promotional purposes. Submission into the exhibition indicates acceptance of these conditions.
