OCTOBER 24, 2012, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM, $7 SUGGESTED DONATION

The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is excited to host a lecture by photographer Mary Ellen Mark. Mary Ellen Mark is considered one of the most respected and influential photographers of our time. She has achieved worldwide visibility from her exhibitions, books and editorial magazine work. Mark’s series Prom: Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark is currently on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This work is presented in conjunction with the J. Paul Getty Museum’s publication of the book by the same name. The book will be available for purchase following the lecture at PPAC.
Mary Ellen Mark will discuss a range of works from her long and extensive career. For over four decades, she has traveled extensively to make pictures that reflect a high degree of humanism, including her images of our world’s diverse cultures from Indian circuses and brothels in Bombay to runaway children in Seattle.
Mary Ellen Mark has published seventeen books and has won countless awards, including the Cornell Capa Award by the International Center of Photography, the Infinity Award for Journalism, the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
This event is part of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center’s visiting contemporary artist lecture series and partially sponsored by the Tyler School of Art. Lectures are open to the public and serve the educational purpose of cultivating an active dialogue surrounding photography.
